Chair Yoga with Ariana Weil
Ariana
I was born in New York and grew up in Germany. After living in Los Angeles for many years, I’m now back in my hometown of Berlin.
As a professional actress for over three decades in both Germany and the USA, I have learned to appreciate the advantages of a flexible body and good breathing techniques. Yoga has supported me throughout my entire life.
In 2018 I completed my 500-hour teacher training at Spirit Yoga in Berlin with a certificate. My main focus is on therapeutic and trauma-sensitive yoga.
I specialize in chair yoga because it is one of the most effective and body-friendly methods, especially for seniors and others who are unable to practice on a mat.
You're never too old for yoga on the chair!

What is Chair Yoga?
Almost all of the yoga positions can easily be practiced in some modified form on a chair. Yoga relieves sluggishness and joint stiffness, and can help to face life’s challenges with more energy. Often, as a start, it’s simply a matter of sitting straight, stretching your spine and breathing deeply.
In contrast to practicing on a mat, we don't have to support our own body weight in the chair, which lets us stretch, build muscles and even do the more strenuous movements more deliberately and with more care.

Chair yoga is suitable for all ages. Even apparent limitations we may experience, such as muscle weakness, pain or high blood pressure, are no obstacle to the practice. On the contrary, all of these difficulties can be reduced and significantly relieved in the long term through specific chair yoga exercises.
Yoga improves our metabolism, reduces back and muscle pain, optimizes blood circulation, stimulates the immune system, trains our focus and memory, and may even protect against falls.
Our mental state improves as well. We breathe deeper and thus absorb more oxygen and more life energy (prana). The result is more joy and greater vitality!
Aging is not “lost youth,”
but a new stage
of opportunity and strength.

The Philosophy of Small Steps
Basically anyone who breathes can benefit from yoga.
Regardless of how our bodies look or how old we are, there is always the next small step that brings us to healing, mobility, deeper breathing and a calmer state of mind, and slowly but steadily improves our quality of life.

What I Offer
My one-on-one classes are specifically tailored to your needs and personal challenges. The free introductory session will always be an initial evaluation and an example of how we will work together.
If possible, I’ll come to your home and bring an exercise chair for you. In case the chair still seems too challenging, even yoga exercises done lying on a bed can achieve amazing results.
The three basic pillars that should be part of a session whenever possible are
-
exercises for a flexible spine (even with scoliosis)
-
focus on the breath (expands the lungs and calms the nervous system)
-
targeted relaxation (promotes sleep and prevents depression)
I draw my therapeutic inspiration primarily from yoga, but I also use modified physiotherapeutic exercises (Qi Gong, acupressure, relaxation, breathing techniques, and visual body scanning).
